Wim Fissette was suddenly disposed of as Naomi Osaka's coach this past week but in the view of Rennae Stubbs and Caitlin Thompson also amid rumours, there could be more than meets the eye.
Fissette was named as Osaka's coach in early 2020 and went on to lead her to two Grand Slam titles. But also amid their split also didn't particularly vindicate his own personal decision to split with Qinwen Zheng last year to return to the former World No.1.
She has now returned to Patrick Mouratoglou with murmerings about money being a factor and the fact that Fissette was taking a chunk of earnings even if she was losing early which given her struggles at times since she has returned would be a fair bit. But in the view of both, he got played knowing full well that he likely doesn't have another player lined-up.
Like alluded to, he quit his partnership with Qinwen Zheng to return to this while Osaka quickly moved to Patrick Mouratoglou so likely had it in the works for at least some time. While it was a partnership that seemed to end amicably, it is also one that in this case seemed to also have some more juice to it that likely won't be seeped out as Stubbs and Thompson discuss.
"If they're losing in the first round, I'm not taking seven percent of their freaking prize money, but there are coaches who do that," Stubbs said in a recent episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.
"I think he (Wim Fissette) got played. I think she (Osaka), based on no insider knowledge whatsoever, but based on the fact that she already has, what appears to be, her next coach lined up, and Wim Fisette does not have, what appears to be, his next player lined up. As far as we know, it does seem to indicate based on speculation that maybe she initiated this and wanted a change."
