The WTA 500 Brisbane International will be a significant starting point for the year, featuring the presence of eight players within the top 20 and seven former Grand Slam champions eager to begin the year on a high note and gain competitive momentum before heading into the Australian Open in mid-January.
The current champion, Aryna Sabalenka, won last year when the tournament was held in Adelaide. The world No. 2 leads the main draw and faces the challenging task of defending the points she earned during the 2023 Australian swing to stay in contention for the world No. 1 spot against Iga Swiatek. Other top-10 players in attendance will include Elena Rybakina (4th). Karolina Muchova has since withdrawn.
One of the highlights of the tournament's main draw is the return of Naomi Osaka, who is coming back to competition after a lengthy hiatus due to her pregnancy and the birth of her first child. The former world No. 1 doesn't have a ranking but received a wild card from the organizers, providing an ideal opportunity to regain competitive rhythm before the Australian Open, a tournament she won in 2019 and 2021.
There are seven players in the draw who are former Grand Slam champions, in addition to Osaka, Sabalenka (2023 AO), and Rybakina (2022 Wimbledon). The 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, former world No. 1 and 2-times Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, the 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, and the 2018 US Open champion Sloane Stephens add further excitement to the tournament.
