Coco Gauff is through to the semi-finals of the 2024 WTA Finals after taking down Iga Swiatek for only the second time in her career. In their 13th career meeting, Gauff defeated the defending champion 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 2-0 in round-robin and take control of the group.
It is Gauff's first over Swiatek since the 2023 Cincinnati Open and saw Swiatek's win-streak end at the WTA Finals. Gauff's position will be dictated on the last day of group play on Thursday when she faces Krejcikova. Swiatek will face Pegula in a rematch of the US Open Quarter-Final in the other tie.
Heading into their match, Swiatek held a dominant 11-1 record against Gauff. This included two wins this season albeit both on clay in Rome and Roland Garros. But Swiatek has looked rusty in her return to the court needing three sets to get past Barbora Krejcikova.
While Gauff eased past former doubles partner Jessica Pegula. The American eased through the opening set without facing a break point. She kept the pressure on Swiatek earning break points in nearly all of her service games and breaking twice.
Swiatek rebounded but still struggled on serve. She broke twice to take the advantage but Gauff hit back both times immediately. Serving to stay in the match at 5-4, Swiatek faltered handing Gauff the match on a plate which she gratefully took. It also saw Aryna Sabalenka confirmed as Year End World No.1 no matter what happens.
