With the Asian Swing of the WTA Tour kicking off this week, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka still have a stranglehold on the top spots in the WTA Race to Riyadh.
Swiatek currently sits atop the rankings with 8,285 points following a quarterfinal US Open appearance. Conversely, Sabalenka holds the second place position, with 7,876 points after capturing the Flushing Meadows title. Both athletes have already secured their place at the year-ending WTA Finals event, but the other six spots are still up for grabs.
After capturing her maiden WTA title at the Guadalajara Open on Sunday, Magdalena Frech entered her name in contention for a spot at the WTA Finals. The Polish star defeated Olivia Gadecki in a thrilling final, ensuring she stood at 1,633 points for a 29th spot in the WTA Race to Riyadh rankings. Runner-up Gadecki also jumped 49 spots to sit at No.86, as the Aussie currently has a total of 549 points.
It was also a memorable week for qualifier Sonay Kartal, who stunned the tennis community by winning the title at the Monastir Open. The British player leaped 41 spots to sit at No.93 on the WTA Race to Riyadh rankings, where she has a total of 480 points.
The 2024 WTA Finals will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from November 2-9, 2024.
