Iga Swiatek extends her lead in the WTA Race to Riyadh after the
Madrid Open title, while
Madison Keys climbs more than 50 positions after a remarkable streak to the semifinals. On the other hand, the runner-up
Aryna Sabalenka and
Elena Rybakina, eliminated in the semifinals against the Belarusian, remain on the podium of the Race.
The four players were the ones who could make the most out of the first WTA 1000 on clay. Swiatek starred in an epic final against Sabalenka, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7) to claim the title, avenging the final from a year earlier. Both Rybakina and Keys were eliminated in the semifinals, while the Kazakh maintains her second position in the Race, the American narrowed the gap with the top after being outside the top-80 in points accumulated in 2024.
The WTA Tour leaders shone in Madrid
2024 continues to see the dominance of the 'Big-3 female', with the Polish player as the undisputed leader with 4,345 points, followed by Rybakina with 3,593 and Sabalenka with 3,288, with more than 1,000 points difference from the fourth, Danielle Collins, who had a streak of 15 consecutive victories from the Miami Open to Madrid.
Meanwhile,
Coco Gauff completes the top-5 of the Race after surprisingly being eliminated in the round of 16 against her compatriot Keys. The 20-year-old player has struggled to reach the final rounds in her recent tournaments but remains in the fifth position with 2,003 points.
Rounding out the top-10 are Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng,
Jasmine Paolini,
Marta Kostyuk,
Jelena Ostapenko, and Daria Kasatkina.
