WTA Race Update: Jessica Pegula cements spot in third after title triumph as Bencic and Keys make up positions after Charleston Open runs

The WTA Race will start to heat up once more as the clay swing becomes the topic of conversation for the next couple of months. A brace of WTA 1000 tournaments followed by Roland Garros will swiftly come about, set to change the order massively. For the time being, the players on the WTA Tour will be looking to get their eye in on this surface.
Some tournaments have already been played in Charleston and Bogota. These were not entertained by Aryna Sabalenka, who earned herself a deserved rest after a Sunshine double to remember. Those points have shot her far ahead of everyone else at the top as she already eyes up the chance to compete for a maiden WTA Finals title after coming so close in recent years.
Take last year, when Elena Rybakina defeated her in the final. Whilst early days it seems like a safe prediction that they will both be in Riyadh at the culmination of the tennis season. The Kazakh sits just under 300 points behind her rival and will also not compete for another week.
Someone who was eager to go on clay was Jessica Pegula. She showed her sky-rocketing credentials once more with a title triumph at the Charleston Open. She was engulfed in a number of battles but saved the best till last in a brilliant week out in South Carolina. The 500 points earned crucially bump her further up in the order, keeping the 32-year-old in third but in a much better position with the aspirations of qualifying for a fifth year in a row.

Players biding their time

There has been little action from the top players in this new part of the season. The showpiece event currently going on, the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, has just one top 10 player competing in the form of Mirra Andreeva. Aside from that, many are waiting to commence their clay swing at the Stuttgart Open next week.
This means movement is scarce. Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova remain in fourth and fifth after bright starts to 2026 with Victoria Mboko in sixth looking increasingly likely that she will be in the fight for a debut at the WTA Finals.
Coco Gauff's prior run to the Miami Open final had boosted her into seventh, and that is where she stays for now. Completing the top eight is Andreeva. A title in Austria will see her leapfrog Gauff in the standings, which may come pivotal come the end of the year. Every point counts when the margins can be as fine as last year. The Russian is the last person needing to be reminded of this as she looks to make up for last year's collapse.
Mirra Andreeva wins point.

The first movement in the order comes from Belinda Bencic moving up a place into ninth, pushing down Amanda Anisimova to 10th. The Swiss was a notable name in Charleston, and missed a trick or two after going out to Madison Keys at the quarterfinal stage. The former Australian Open champion would depart a round later, spurning the chance for more points but has benefited from this run with a 14-place rise into 13th.
Just ahead of her, Iga Swiatek will be raring to go for this clay swing alongside Francisco Roig. It will be crucially important for her to get some momentum back on a surface she has adored in the past. Some deep runs and even titles will get her back in the hunt for one of the coveted WTA Finals qualifying positions and shrug off any fleeting concerns over her participation in November.
