The WTA Rankings have been updated for the new week after the DC Open in Washington with Leylah Fernandez, Anna Kalinskaya and Emma Raducanu all excelling ahead of a busy time in the coming weeks ahead of the US Open.
The top 20 remains unchanged with the aforementioned duo leading the way further down when it comes to changes. Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Elena Rybakina and Clara Tauson all played from that top 20 but Pegula and Navarro lost in their opening matches. Tauson and Rybakina had better weeks.
Tauson lost in the Quarter-Finals while Rybakina reached the last four before spurning her semi-final tie against eventual champion Leylah Fernandez. Speaking of the excellent Canadian, she crushed Anna Kalinskaya in the final 6-1, 6-2 who is still without a WTA title. For Fernandez, it is her fourth but it is the biggest of her career.
She started out the event ranked World No.36 and has surged up to World No.24 after winning what is her best career title. It is also her biggest points haul since she lost in the 2021 US Open final to Emma Raducanu in a final we could've got again for the first time since if the Brit had beaten Anna Kalinskaya but it wasn't to be. Fernandez hasn't reached her peak ranking wise as she used to be World No.13.
But it was a step in the right direction on a week where it was one where resurgent names excelled. Rybakina despite that damning loss can take some solace albeit not ranking wise yet as she is still World No.12 but adds an important 500 points. Raducanu reached her first semi-final of the season and is up from 46th spot to World No.33. It is her highest ranking since August 2022 just before her points dropped from her US Open run.
It marks a step in the right direction for the Brit who in her career thus far has battled injuries constantly and has also been under intense scrutiny from all sections of the tennis world after rising as a qualifier to the top of the sport in such a short span of time. She has gained stability in the coaching ranks with Mark Petchey involved with her and has added new facets to her game and continues to grow.

Emma Raducanu on the rise again.
Albeit there is a sting in the tail yet to come ranking wise as despite going back to British No.1, she will only just keep it next week. She will drop to World No.42 next time out as she will drop 108 points from reaching the Quarter-Finals of the DC Open and will need a good run in Canada where she didn't compete last year to gain that rise back immediately.
Kalinskaya also rose after reaching the final. Her search for a maiden title goes on after her third final defeat. She lost in Berlin last year as well as Dubai where she rose towards the top 10 ranking wise. But due to injury and illness consistently, she rapidly descended. She continued her love affair though with Washington and has gone from World No.48 to World No.31 as a result of sealing the final spot.

Sakkari back on the rise

Elsewhere Marie Bouzkova winning Prague has seen her rise up to World No.39, while after a good middle of the year last year Olga Danilovic has paid the price for not defending that falling eight spots to World No.40. Maria Sakkari and Taylor Townsend though are on the up.
Sakkari is up 18 spots to World No.72 while Townsend moves up 22 spots to World No.75. Both especially Sakkari have ascended higher heights before but the Greek will look to make up for lost time after not playing for most of the end of last year so won't defend a lot from here on out. But being at such a lowly ranking, she has to currently depend on wildcards.
While Elina Avanesyan has slid down 13 spots to World No.67, Alycia Parks also suffered with a 16 place drop to World No.74. With most of the top names unlike the men's playing in Canada this week, it will be intriguing to see what happens. Aryna Sabalenka remains the imperious queen at the top of the rankings but defends the US Open in the coming month. While Iga Swiatek appears to be getting stronger and sits ready to pounce. She could still end the year feasibly as Year End No.1.
