The WTA season is swiftly concluding with just a handful of events remaining for players to jump up the rankings. Elena Rybakina's 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final of the Ningbo Open has seen her clamber up a few places, capitalising on a positive vein of form she has entered.

Rybakina and Paolini rise while top three stay same

It was a successful week in Ningbo for the 2022 Wimbledon champion who moves up to 7th in the world after her second title of 2025. She now sits on 4,505 points with her now looking for more ground to make up in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Enroute to the final she defeated Jasmine Paolini who has also benefited from a deep run, staying just ahead of the Kazakhstani as she also moves up two places into sixth in the world on 4,525 points. While her Grand Slam form may have not been on point this year, the Italian has enjoyed some successful results in Masters 1000 events, winning her home event in Rome before losing in the final in Cincinnati. She was unable to reach a third final this year, but her semi-final run still sees her gain ground.
It has been a quiet week for the top three who have all make the executive decision to not compete and have a week off, preparing for the upcoming WTA Finals. Aryna Sabalenka keeps her hefty lead with 10,390 points, with Iga Swiatek her closest challenger with 8,703. The title in Wuhan put Coco Gauff on 7,863 points as they look to once again battle in Riyadh in the Tour Finals. There is also no change for Amanda Anisimova in fourth and Jessica Pegula in fifth.

Andreeva big loser

It has been a dismal Asian swing for Mirra Andreeva who has dropped three places in the rankings, down to 4,319 points after yet another early exit in Ningbo. A surprise third-round exit in New York was followed by a surprise defeat to Sonay Kartal in the China Open round-of-16. She would lose in the opening round of the following 1000 event in Wuhan before being pegged back by the world number 219 Lin Zhu in Ningbo. She could only sit and watch her rivals go past her, benefitting from the Russian prodigy tripping over herself.
Despite reaching the final, fellow Russian Alexandrova has stayed put in 10th place with 3,375 points. Two final defeats in the Asian swing has bumped her up into the top 10 for the first time, as she looks t continue her positive form into Tokyo.

Osaka finalists benefit

Over in Osaka, the Japan Open was being played out with Leylah Fernandez entering as the number four seed and leaving as the champion. Her 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory over teenager Tereza Valentova sees her move up five places from 27th to 22nd, now on 1,869 points. She was the biggest mover in the top 30, while a pair of Romanians also ventured up the rankings. Jaqueline Cristian and Sorana Cirstea both made the semi-finals in Osaka, seeing them go up. Cristian moves up five places to 42nd, one off her career best, while Cirstea rises six to leave herself in 45th in the world.
The biggest winner was Valentova whose final run puts her on 1,072 points and see her venture to a new high of 57th in the world after canning up 21 places, her maiden time in the top 60.

Kasatkina continues to fall

Daria Kasatkina was poised to fall down the rankings with her not competing in Ningbo. The 2024 champion has fallen 13 places, with her now sitting in 35th in the world has she continues to plummet down after a period of barren results. Similar to Kartal, who was also defending a lot of points around this time last year. She recently made it to the quarter-finals of the China Open, but has not competed since, seeing her suffer a 10-place fall in the rankings, now down in 68th.
