With the Qatar Open having been concluded, there is a lot of
moving up and down the rankings with a whole host of points being handed out to
fortunate and deserving players while others rue a missed opportunity with huge
chunks permanently coming off.
Anisimova drops spots after failed title defence
There is no change right at the top, with
Aryna Sabalenka
continuing to have a huge lead over the chasing pack despite her not competing
in any of the events in the Middle East.
Iga Swiatek sits in second while Elena
Rybakina slots in third. This could soon change if Rybakina reaches the
semi-final in the
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships next week. However,
after their quarterfinal runs in Doha, they both remain put.
The first movement sees Amanda Anisimova confirmed to drop
down two places due to her failure to defend the Qatar Open title won last
year. 990 points come off and fellow countrywomen Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula
are bumped up a spot.
It is set to be a hugely crucial period for Mirra Andreeva
who is set to see 2000 points come off her tally after those titles in Dubai
and Indian Wells are set to depart. She stays seventh after reaching the
last-16 of the tournament in Qatar. Jasmine Paolini and Elina Svitolina stay
put in eighth and ninth.
Mboko and Muchova enjoy rewards from Qatar runs
The big story has to be the Qatar Open runner-up Victoria
Mboko who is now officially a top 10 player. For the first time in 17 years,
two teenagers will be in the top 10. An incredible feat from a class player. It
was also a great outing for
Karolina Muchova who defeated the Canadian in the
final and clinched a second WTA title, first since 2019. This results in her
gaining 1000 points putting her 11th in the rankings. A return to the top
10 could be soon on the cards for the Czech player.
Karolina Muchova holds the 2026 Qatar Open title
Ekaterina Alexandrova’s return to the top 10 really did not
last long. She drops two places to 12th while Belinda Bencic and Linda
Noskova also slip two positions due to the movement from below. Clara Tauson,
Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, Ludmilla Samsonova and Emma Navarro all remain in
the same order but fall a singular place to make up rankings 15-19. Iva Jovic
wraps up the top 20.
A return to the court for Qinwen Zheng results in a
three-place rise to 23rd in the world with Anna Kalinskaya following in
suit, climbing four places thanks to the quarterfinal in Doha. Marta Kostyuk
loses another three places, with the same happening to Jelena Ostapenko
although that is a great result. Defending a final, she managed to claw most of
the points back as she reached the semi-final stage. Sofia Kenin’s three place
drop sees Maya Joint, Sorana Cirstea and McCartney Kessler go up one space.
Sakkari the big winner as Badosa loses more ground
The most places risen award goes to Maria Sakkari. A
deserved winner clambers up 19 spots to 33rd in the world. After a rough
patch on court, the Greek looks rejuvenated as she sails up the order on the
cusp of the top 32.
With a WTA 1000 event offering so many points, there is no
surprise that there are a lot of big movements up and down the rankings. A
quarterfinal for Elisabetta Cocciaretto sees her clamber up to 40th with a
new career high for Tereza Valentova. She now places 42nd in the world.
There are mixed results for a brace of Colombian players as
they close in on each other from different angles. Emiliana Arango dropped nine
slots to 58th while Camila Osorio jumped up a whopping 17 places to 63rd. In
between this, Varvara Gracheva bathed in the plus 13 rise she enjoyed, now
settling in 60th.
Former world number two Paula Badosa continues her slide
down the rankings, losing another six places as she starts the week in 70th.
Right at the bottom, Ashlyn Krueger makes a return to the top 100 in 100th
after climbing one place.
