Fans
criticized the selection of Jimmy Arias as a commentator for the
DC Open
following his discourteous comments about
Iga Swiatek.
The former
world No. 5 was chosen as a commentator and announcer for Tennis Channel and
ESPN's coverage of the ATP and WTA DC Open, the first joint 500-level
tournament for both men and women.
Jimmy Arias
has been at the center of controversies with his recent comments, including his
opinion on Kyrgios' future retirement, which led the Australian to respond
angrily on Twitter.
The
American was also criticized for his remarks on Tennis Channel's Inside In
podcast regarding Swiatek and her signature hat usage.
“From my
standpoint, I don’t think she’s been great for women’s tennis,” Arias said on
the “Inside In” podcast.
“Because
she wears her hat so low that you can’t even see her face or her eyes during a
match, so you don’t get a connection as much as you could. I don’t mind her
getting angry in some ways, but I want to see her personality,” he added.
Fans had a
quick reaction to Arias' comments, which were considered sexist by many.
Despite the controversy, Arias will be part of the team covering the
tournament, along with Jenson Brooksby, Andrea Petkovic, among others.
Here are
some of the comments that were seen on Twitter:
“This is
bad on so many levels. Homogenous, male majority and a player that is banned.”
“90% are
men. Then you have individuals like Jimmy Aires talking about the WTA. Unbalanced
coverage and a patronizing tone are the norm. The sad thing is, they don't even
feel the need to pretend.”
“So basically only one
woman, but I guess we should be happy because we will get a mansplainer who
will make sure we understand that WTA is not about winning tournaments but
about what the women players wear?”
“Is mr.
Aries going to speak about how women outfits and looks combined to their tennis
achievements? Maybe you should think about cooperate with more women 1/10 is
poor”
