Czech Republic’s tennis star
Karolina Pliskova believes that
WTA is suffering from a marketing problem after the retirement of the likes of Serena
Williams and Maria Sharapova.
There has been discussion about who is the face of women’s tennis,
especially after the retirement of legendary Serena. Pliskova was recently quoted
in a report where she stated that WTA has been dealing with a marketing problem
in the recent past.
“I guess not only I feel that it’s not easy entirely ideal,
even though each of today’s top girls has something to offer,” she said. “I won’t
comment on the tennis, but charisma plays a role too. Sharapova and Serena were
huge personalities, even in the marketing world.
“You can’t compare today’s girl with them. And I think that
in this situation, the WTA isn’t helping much either. It doesn’t seem to me
that they promote it well. Women’s tennis now seems sidelined, not as many people
go to it as before.
“When I was playing well and these big names were still
active, the level of everything around was higher. Girls have groups on WhatsApp, they discuss
it. But I don’t comment on it, changes take a long time and I don’t want to put
energy into it. I am not at the beginning of my career anymore so it goes beyond
me.”
