Although Defending champion Coco Gauff saw her US Open campaign come to a bitter end in the fourth round this year, the American still has reason to hold her head high, according to Gauff's coach, Brad Gilbert.
Following a rather disappointing summer on North American hardcourts, Gauff was hoping to rediscover her form in an attempt to defend the Grand Slam title she won in New York last season. However, the American's title hopes were dashed as she fell to compatriot Emma Navarro in the fourth round, the second time Gauff has fallen to her countrywoman in consecutive Major events.
The renown coach broke his silence of Gauff's exit when he made an appearance on CNBC. Gilbert reflected on the 20-year old's performance during the last Grand Slam of the season, praising Gauff's work ethic and demeanor even after her disappointing loss.
"Sometimes they catch you with your head down a little bit, didn't go as well here as we would like," said Gilbert. "But, the sun comes up the next day and then you got to be positive, and hopefully things will get better."
Although Gauff won a title in Auckland at the start of the year, she has yet to reach the final of any women's singles event this season.
