Legendary tennis player Switzerland’s
Roger Federer has
heaped praise on America’s young sensation
Coco Gauff after her triumph at the
US Open 2023.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is moving
towards its conclusion as the women’s singles category final was played on
Saturday.
It was America’s young tennis star Gauff who came out on top
against the newly-crowned world number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka with a
score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Federer, who is termed by many as one of the greatest
players in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, heaped praise
on Gauff in a post on his official account on X, previously known as Twitter.
“Inspirational win @CocoGauff. Been watching your and
following you for years. It’s great to see so much hard work and passion being
rewarded. You shine brighter than ever,” he posted.
Federer announced his retirement last year in September
after struggling with fitness concerns for a very long time.
The 41-year-old finished his illustrious career at the
highest level with 20 Grand Slam titles to his name.
He was the first player in the men’s singles category in the
Open era to win more than 15 major titles and was the first to win 20
Grand Slams in his career.
Federer’s most successful competition was Wimbledon where he
ended up lifting the title as many as eight times which is still a record in the
tournament’s history.
