Spain’s
Davis Cup team captain
David Ferrer has admitted that
the absence of young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz will be a big blow.
The 20-year-old became the talk of the town after winning Wimbledon
2023 in July earlier this year after defeating Serbia’s legendary tennis player
Novak Djokovic in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
It was earlier announced that Alcaraz will be a part of Spain’s team in the Davis Cup but it has recently been announced that he will
miss the competition to avoid fatigue.
Ferrer was quoted in a report published on the Davis Cup's official
website where he expressed full confidence in his team despite the absence of
the current world number two.
“It was tough [to loose a player like Alcaraz] because he is
an important player, one of the best players in the world,” said the
41-year-old. “But I trust my team. I am very confident that can do a great week
and can compete with everyone.”
Ferrer further went on to explain that he is trying to teach
different things to his team players such as ‘integrity’ and ‘humbleness’.
“Union. To be humble. Integrity. I am trying to give them
[the players] these values,” he said. “Of course, the important thing is to win
the ties and have the best players but it is very important to have a good
environment.”
Despite that success in London, Alcaraz failed to keep the
winning momentum going as he first lost the final of the Cincinnati Open
(Western & Southern Open) to Djokovic and was later knocked out of the US
Open 2023 as well.
While defending his title, Alcaraz lost to the current world
number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal of the mega-event with a
score of 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
