A new ATP 250 event will be held next week in California with the San Diego Open making its debut with a strong field.
The event was never played before and the 2021 edition will be the first edition of the event. It will run from September 27th till October 3rd with some big names in attendance. Straight from the Laver Cup, the top seed will be Andrey Rublev and he will look to build up some confidence ahead of the Indian Wells Masters. He has a 1st round BYE with either Fognini or Nakashima waiting in R2.
The 2nd seed is fellow Laver Cup teammate Casper Ruud and the Norwegian has a very tough draw. He will either face Kei Nishikori or Andy Murray in the 2nd round. That matchup is the premier matchup in R1 and a very tough draw for both Nishikori and Murray.
Other notable 1st round matchups include Marton Fucsovics against Grigor Dimitrov which should prove a very good match. Another interesting one is between Lorenzo Sonego and Cameron Norrie as well as Christian Garin against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The event has a very strong field including seeds Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Diego Schwartzman with all three coming from Boston after the Laver Cup.
