The 2024
BMW Munich Open continues on Wednesday with two of the top names in the tournament starting their campaigns in
Alexander Zverev and
Taylor Fritz. Our
preview looks ahead to the main ties and talking points to watch ahead of Day Three in the clay court staple in Germany.
Zverev two years on from his horrific Roland Garros injury has emerged back towards the top table of the ATP and is seen as a bonafide contender again. Last year in similar circumstances, he picked up Hamburg returning home as the tournament favourite so that road begins again here. He faces Jurij Rodionov in the opening round. But also there is a slight caveat. He has not played well at all in this tournament for half a decade and has not been able to add to his double success. He won the title in 2017 and 2018 and was dumped out first round last year. Rodionov has had Challenger success and reached a career high this season, so it could be a tricky opener if any sort of doubt creeps in.
Taylor Fritz has had a middling season. He won Delray Beach, but has also struggled at times to string results together. He faces Alejandro Moro Canos again with that nothing to lose reputation. Canas upset Dominic Thiem and has had varying degrees of success on the Challenger Tour, Fritz on the other hand usually struggles on clay. So it might be a long day at the office for the American. While
Alex Michelsen as an American has been superb. Facing a clay court specialist in Cristian Garin, he would usually be seen as the outsider. But Garin has not been at his best this season and the star of Michelsen continues to shine ever brighter.
Jack Draper is also involved as he faces Rudolf Molleker which starts the day. A top
schedule awaits in Munich as the top names enter the fray in the Bavarian city.
