The
schedule has been confirmed ahead of Wednesday at the 2024
French Open which will see
Carlos Alcaraz and
Iga Swiatek in particular back in action on the courts of Paris with some top ties set to take place.
Our preview gives you the main talking points and matches to look forward to as the second round begins at
Roland Garros featuring many of the top contenders for the title.
Queen of Clay takes centre stage against fellow four-time Grand Slam champion
Iga Swiatek will be in the main tie of the day as the defending French Open champion will take on
Naomi Osaka in a reunion of sorts. They played in Osaka's last final before going off due to pregnancy as Swiatek sealed the title 6-4, 6-0 back in 2022. They also faced off before Swiatek's reign at the top of the sport began back in 2019 which saw victory for Osaka at the Rogers Cup.
Swiatek started her campaign with an emphatic win over Leolia Jeanjean and will hope for a similar statement against a player with as many Grand Slam titles as her albeit isn't as adept on clay. Now dubbed 'Clayomi', Osaka battled past Lucia Bronzetti. It could've been a lot simpler, but she is getting better on a surface which she doesn't typically have a lot of joy on. Swiatek will make her slide up and down the court and work for every point and so will Osaka flip the script on her and make it a battle for the ages?
Alcaraz and Sinner among other attractions on Wednesday
As well as Swiatek on Court Philippe-Chatrier, there are two of the main protagonists in the men's draw. Jannik Sinner will play in the Night Session which pays credence to the view point that likely WTA stars won't get the same treatment this tournament in playing Night Session.
Especially given that if Novak Djokovic gets through (pending as of time of writing), he will likely play at the same time as Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka for the rest of the tournament so aside from either getting a slot late, it seems that ATP will once again rule the roost.
Perhaps it is warranted given that Sinner is playing Richard Gasquet who utterly captivated the crowd inside Court Suzanne Lenglen earlier this week chanting his name and he is a draw in Paris. But also it perhaps expands onto a wider point about the continued lack of attention shown to the WTA in scheduling.
Albeit Carlos Alcaraz will play during the day tomorrow. He will be second on Court Philippe-Chatrier. He doesn't take on Brit, Jack Draper but in fact Jesper de Jong will be his opponent. The Dutchman found his way past the Brit earlier this week, while for Alcaraz it was J.J Wolf who offered up little fight. Sofia Kenin v Caroline Garcia will be the other tie on Court Philippe-Chatrier as Fly with Caro looks to take off again for another flight of fancy for the French fans.
Over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, it is a superb line-up featuring Stefanos Tsitsipas, Ons Jabeur, Andrey Rublev and Coco Gauff who will all continue their campaigns. Danielle Collins will once again pay her bills as she quipped when she faces Olga Danilovic again. But Court 7 perhaps has the best line-up. Ben Shelton will face Kei Nishikori in a real must watch clash, Jelena Ostapenko takes on Clara Tauson. Grigor Dimitrov will face Fabian Marozsan and Amanda Anisimova takes on Liudmila Samsonova. As the second round begins, it sure isn't short of quality.
