The draw has been confirmed ahead of the Geneva Open which is due to take place between 19-25 May, 2024 on the red clay of Switzerland. It is a field led by Novak Djokovic who accepted a late wildcard to play in the Swiss city.
Djokovic was asked if he would like to play amid a recent lack of form which saw the World No.1 return to action at the Rome Open after two months away but flounder against Alejandro Tabilo. Albeit this after the water bottle incident after defeating Corentin Moutet, this saw a metal bottle fall onto his head and albeit he did joke about it in the aftermath, he wasn't right on court.
Djokovic though underwent medical testing and it was found that he was fine and that he was fit to return to action after thorough examination. He then decided to play one more tournament which is a big surprise for the Serbian who usually doesn't attempt to play before a Grand Slam. But such has been the form of the great Serbian this year that he feels he has to. But it could be a familiar face early on in Geneva.
Djokovic could take on a certain Andy Murray in the second round who formed part of the so-called Big Four with Nadal and Federer during the 2000's. It was unclear whether they would ever meet again but fans will be hoping that the Brit can find his way through. He won through his opener at the Bordeaux Challenger this week.
But lost out to Gregoire Barrere fairly comfortably and now heads to Geneva. It is an unknown for Murray who doesn't usually play any clay tournaments in recent years. But with Roland Garros and Olympic Games on his brain, he has decided to. Sitting on the opposite side of the draw and a potential final is Casper Ruud.
A career spanning basically 20 years for both, they have faced off a remarkable 36 times with Djokovic leading the Head to Head 25-11. They last played technically in the Doha final of 2017 with Djokovic also winning in Madrid in 2022 but through walk-over. But a meeting that over the years has thrilled tennis fans could get one final chapter.
Ruud will face either a qualifier or Rinky Hijikata. He then could take on Sebastian Baez feasibly who faces Sumit Nagal first. The winner of Daniel Altmaier and Roberto Carballes Baena awaits that winner. Taylor Fritz who has been in superb form is third seed, he faces Alex Michelsen or a qualifier. Jack Draper or Tomas Machac are the likely nearest competitors in his quarter. They face off first round.
Other ties are Christopher Eubanks facing Tallon Griekspoor, the returning Denis Shapovalov faces Federico Coria. Fabian Marozsan takes on Alexander Shevchenko too. Nicolas Jarry is defending champion, but he withdrew due to playing in the semi-finals of the Rome Open. Grigor Dimitrov who reached the final also won't return either with a diminished line-up.
