Stan Wawrinka returns at Swiss Indoors
Stan Wawrinka continues to stack up ATP commitments after receiving a new wildcard for an ATP-level tournament: the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, France. This marks a shift from his 2024 calendar, where he opted to travel for the South American clay swing.
This time, Wawrinka—now 40 years old—accepted a wildcard for the Open Occitanie, which will be held from February 1-8, marking his first tournament after the Australian Open. It’s another piece of good news for the Swiss legend as he looks to recover positions in the ATP Ranking, having finished the year as World No. 157.
"I am very happy to announce that I will be back in Montpellier! I hope to see you all there," declared the Swiss player in a video published on the tournament's social media.
The former World No. 3 had a complicated 2025 season, finishing outside the Top 150 for the second consecutive year. Stan continues to extend his career at 40, and capitalizing on wildcards to pick up wins at the ATP level will be key if he wants to climb back up the rankings:
"For me, it's all about competition. It is also an opportunity to push myself, to reach my full potential, to give the best of myself. I continue to train hard to be in top shape during tournaments and matches. I hope to re-enter the top 100 in 2026, participate in major tournaments, continue to progress, and see where I stand at the end of the year. Even after 20 years on the tour, I still love this sport just as much. I am passionate about tennis and the emotions I feel while playing in different cities and at different tournaments."

A packed start to the year

Wawrinka had already been announced for some early-season tournaments that could give him a good chance to rack up points. The Swiss will be the captain and leader of Team Switzerland at the United Cup, where he will join Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Belinda Bencic to face Italy and France in Perth.
Once his participation in that tournament concludes, Wawrinka is confirmed with a wildcard to play in the ASB Classic, marking his return to the tournament in Auckland after nearly 20 years, with his last appearance back in 2007.
“It was a great experience. I haven't had the chance to go back since, but I am really happy to return. I decided to come back this year to have the chance to play in Auckland again in front of my fans. I remember the incredible atmosphere that prevailed there and I really look forward to being there. I love the competition.”
