Carlos Alcaraz was a pretty good player last year but his dramatic rise this year earned him a nomination for the Most Improved Player of the Year and he won it.
Alcaraz finished the 2021 year in the top 30 with his goal for this year to be in the top 15. He blew that goal out of the water by finishing the year number one in the rankings with multiple trophies in his cabinet with one of those being a grand slam trophy - US Open. Some might take issue with this award as it generally implies a player who made tremendous progress and generally is not reserved for players that were good last year but he deserves it.
Making a jump from good to great is very hard let alone the best. Securing the number one ranking seemed quite impossible but he was able to do it with impressive play throughout the year. After all, he became the first non-Big-4 player since Andy Roddick to finish the year as number one.
