Carlos
Alcaraz showed absolute dominance over Matteo Arnaldi, defeating him 6-3, 6-3,
6-4 and advancing to the quarterfinals at the
US Open.
In the
first set, the Italian entered with determination to challenge Alcaraz and won
his first two service games without much trouble, maintaining parity until the
sixth game when the Spanish player secured the first break and took a 4-2 lead.
Without a
doubt, Alcaraz held his serve to take the first set 6-3. The World No. 1
capitalized on net approaches to close out points and attempted dropshots to
surprise Arnaldi. Alcaraz won 86% of points when he approached the net, while
the Italian managed only 25%.
In the
second set, Alcaraz displayed more confidence in his service. In the first set,
he only managed a 54% first-serve percentage, which significantly increased to
78% in the second set. This time, Arnaldi tried to take the offensive but faced
an Alcaraz who responded to almost everything.
The first
break came in the first game in favor of Alcaraz, who seized his first
opportunity to take the lead. The Spanish player did not hesitate with his
service and maintained the advantage until 5-3 when he secured his third break
of the match, closing out the set again at 6-3.
Arnaldi
showed character in the third set, with little left to lose, facing the
defending US Open champion. The first break went in his favor in the third
game, but he couldn’t hold it in his next service game.
With the score tied, Arnaldi succumbed to the pressure at 5-4 in his favor, conceding three match points to his opponent, who capitalized on them to finish 6-3, 6-3, 6-4
In the
quarterfinals, a rematch of the 2022 US Open clash with Jannik Sinner could be
on the horizon, a match won by Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3—a match
highlighted by the ATP as the best of the year at a Grand Slam.
Before
that, the Italian must face the 12th seed, Alexander Zverev, who has shown
resilience at this US Open and will pose a formidable challenge for the World
No. 6.
