Australian
tennis player Ellen Perez called on fellow tennis players to speak out about
the situation of
Simona Halep following her doping case.
The former
world No. 1 continues to face uncertainty regarding the decision that the ITIA
and ITF will make regarding the charges against her related to alleged doping.
Simona Halep has repeatedly denied the charges that have kept her suspended for
a year.
The
Romanian player is under provisional suspension as the International Tennis
Integrity Agency (ITIA) has yet to announce the outcome of Halep's appeal to
determine her possible sanctions or acquittal on charges related to the use of
Roxadustat, which she claims she never took intentionally.
While Halep
received support from Darren Cahill and
Patrick Mouratoglou, there haven't been
many tennis players who have spoken out on the matter. Among them, her
compatriot
Sorana Cirstea, currently in the quarterfinals of the
US Open,
previously expressed her support, as well as former world No. 1
Ashleigh Barty
speaking in favor of Halep.
Australian
tennis player Ellen Perez used social media to address Halep's case and called
on other tennis players to discuss the situation:
“Irrelevant
of if you believe Simona Halep is innocent or not, every athlete deserves a
fair and timely trial. How the ITIA and ITF is handling this is beyond poor 🤦♀️ I urge other athletes to speak up because if
it was you in this situation you’d hope for the same,” Ellen Perez stated.
Perez
primarily competes in WTA Tour doubles, where she reached world No. 9 and
currently holds the world No. 13 ranking. The Australian entered the US Open as
the 5th seed alongside her teammate Nicole Melichar, but they were defeated in
the second round by Magda Linette and Bernarda Pera.
Perez is
still in competition in mixed doubles with Paraguayan partner Jean Julien
Roger, with whom they entered as the 5th seeds. In the quarterfinals, they will
face the top-seeded American pair of Jessica Pegula and Austin Krajicek.
