Caroline Wozniacki has said that she is taking a lot of positives from her first
US Open run in several years despite her fourth-round exit against
Coco Gauff.
The former world No. 1 was away from the sport for three and a half years after initially retiring in early 2020. She then went on to have two children before announcing her return to the sport in June of this year. Wozniacki made her comeback to the
WTA Tour at the Canadian Open before returning to Grand Slams as a wild card at the US Open.
Wozniacki had a good run at the New York major, defeating Tatiana Prozorova, eleventh seed
Petra Kvitova, and
Jennifer Brady. The Dane's success came to an end in the Round of 16 though, as she lost in three sets to home favorite Gauff, who won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in just over two hours.
Wozniacki talks of "positives"
Despite the defeat, Wozniacki seemed upbeat in her post-match press conference and expressed her confidence.
"I mean, yeah, I am encouraged. I think my game is pretty good. I think that I can beat anyone on any given day. I also believe if I'm not playing my best, I can also lose.
"There's a lot of positives to take with me going forward. I'm on the right track. I'm finding my form, I'm finding my feet. I know what I'm doing on the practice court is the right thing. So I'm excited to take on more events, more players out there," she said.
Wozniacki added that she was precisely where she wanted to be at this stage in her comeback.
"I think I'm exactly where I want to be. There's still a few things that I want to work on and I can do better. But in general I think it's very positive. I think every event that I played, I played a little better. Every match I played here, I played a little bit better each time. A lot of positives I can bring with me," she continued.
