Alejandro Davidovich Fokina began his latest Wimbledon press conference by apologising for an interview that went viral a few days earlier. The Spaniard had opened his campaign with a straight-sets win over Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, but immediately after the match, his brief on-court responses drew attention for their unusually short nature.
The images from his first-round interview quickly spread on social media, where several users criticised the Spaniard’s blunt answers.
During the Movistar+ on-court interview, he had responded with minimal words, often monosyllabic replies, to standard post-match questions.
However, this time Davidovich Fokina made a point of addressing the situation directly. At the start of his second-round winning interview, he immediately apologised to the same reporter who had conducted the first interview just two days earlier, when he had struggled to give extended answers.

First-round interview and viral reaction

In his opening match, Davidovich Fokina defeated Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo — known for his earlier win over Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros — in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(2).
The Spaniard extended his winning streak to five consecutive victories on grass after claiming his first ATP title the previous weekend at the Mallorca Championships.
The post-match interview quickly went viral due to its unusually brief exchange.
Reporter: Congratulations, you’ve had four intense days with this match and the title in Mallorca. How are you feeling?
Davidovich Fokina: Bad.
Reporter: Tired?
Davidovich Fokina: No.
Reporter: Can you describe it a bit better, Alejandro please?
Davidovich Fokina: My whole body hurts.
Reporter: Well, you now have time to recover. Good luck in the next round.
Davidovich Fokina: Thank you.
The short answers sparked immediate reaction online, with debate about whether the Spaniard was physically exhausted or simply reluctant to speak after a demanding run of matches.

Second-round response and apology

On Wednesday, Davidovich Fokina returned to Centre Court for his second-round match against Hungary’s Fábián Marozsán. It was a rematch just days after their meeting in the Mallorca semi-final, where the Spaniard had also prevailed in three sets.
This time, the result was even more decisive, as Davidovich produced a commanding performance, dropping only six games in a 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 victory. The win reinforced his strong form on grass and extended his momentum following his title run.
Interviewer: Congratulations, what a match, what an exhibition. You’re playing incredible tennis right now.
Davidovich Fokina: I just want to say sorry for the interview two days ago.
Interviewer: No need at all, you were exhausted, we explained it on the show, don’t worry.
Davidovich Fokina: My back was hurting, I had a panic attack. I just wanted to go to the locker room.
Following the exchange, both continued discussing the match, including the strong support he received from the crowd and his improved physical condition compared to the previous round.
“I really wanted to go on court because, as I said, I was feeling terrible the other day,” the former world No. 14 said. “Today from the warm-up I felt that energy again, that desire to compete and fight for every ball.”
“I knew it was going to be a tough match, maybe similar to Mallorca, but I’m really happy with the level I showed from the beginning and very satisfied overall.”

In the third round of Wimbledon, Davidovich Fokina will once again face Hungarian opposition, this time against experienced Marton Fucsovics, who produced a surprise win over 16th seed Learner Tien in the second round.
The 34-year-old has previously shown strong performances on grass, including a run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2021, where he was eventually defeated by Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion.
