Alex de Minaur needed all the games he could collect after a tight 2025 ATP Finals campaign
Alex De Minaur has been named the winner of the 2025 Newcombe Medal at the Australian Tennis Awards in Melbourne. This is the fourth time he has won this illustrious award.
It is as high as an honour you can achieve in Australian tennis, being handed out to only the very best. In this case, de Minaur is a worthy winner as the event celebrated his outstanding achievements on the global stage this year.
Once more, he is Australia's highest ranked player, finishing seventh in the world after reaching the ATP Finals semi-final for a maiden time in his career. He won his tenth senior ATP title in the DC Open, coming out on top against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina while losing the ABN AMRO Open to Carlos Alcaraz in February. He added to his ever-growing list of major quarter-finals, with two coming in from the Australian Open and US Open along with three Masters 1000 quarter-finals and a last-four appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
He was very grateful when accepting his award, first thanking the person which the medal is named after. “I would like to thank - first of all John Newcombe himself. It’s an incredible honour to receive this medal. Thank you to everyone involved with an incredible event,” De Minaur began.
“It's been a great year. I'm very proud of everything that I've achieved. Of course, I wouldn't have been able to do it without an incredible team around me that continuously pushed me very hard to continue to try and achieve and get the most out of myself."
He went on to highlight the hotbed of talent coming out of Australia. “I just appreciate everything that I've been given, and I'm very proud to be an Australian tennis player with all the steps forward that we have made. There are an immense amount of players cracking into the top 100, both in the women's side and in the men's side," he said. "We are a force to be reckoned with, and I'm extremely proud to be an Australian and to continue to try and improve and get the most out of myself. I'll do both, Australia and John Newcombe very proud. Thank you everyone and hope you guys have a wonderful night.”
Newcombe is widely considered as Australia's greatest ever player. He won an incredible seven Grand Slams while sitting as world number one for eight weeks. “It’s been an interesting ride for Alex. Just watching him, he’s gradually kept up the pressure, creeping up the rankings and now he’s in the top 10, every year it’s a better performance,” Newcombe said, highly praising his fellow Aussie.

What is next for de Minaur?

Despite the season finishing, de Minaur is still winning titles on the court. He successfully defended his Ultimate Tennis Showdown title in London on December 7, defeating three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud in the final.
This is all good preparation for his return to the United Cup from January 2-11. The hosts have only managed to make it out of the group on one occasion back in 2024, climaxing in the semi-finals. This year they boast a very strong team in the form of de Minaur and 19-year-old sensation Maya Joint.
They will be gunning for glory on home soil ahead of the Australian Open to kick start the Grand Slam events in 2026. De Minaur made it all the way to the quarter-finals before being demolished by the eventual winner Jannik Sinner. It was his best run in Melbourne, but he is hoping to go even further with the title the overall target. The event will be held from January 18 - February 1.
