The Class of 2024 ATP Player Advisory Council (PAC) was confirmed on Monday and part of the new additions was Alexander Zverev which saw anger from tennis fans all over social media.
Zverev alongside Dusan Lajovic, Mackenzie McDonald, Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, and Matthew Ebden were chosen by their fellow players to serve a term on the Player Council. They meet several times yearly and offer recommendations to ATP management and the ATP Board of Directors. It serves as a governing body to ensure players' voices are heard and represented.
But Zverev's pick is a contentious one with the former World No.2 being accused of domestic violence by his former partner and mother to his child, Brenda Patea. He is currently issued a penalty order and has been fined €450,000 and still maintains his innocence.
He was also accused by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova albeit no further action was taken by the ATP themselves amid an internal investigation carried out on Zverev. Fans took to social media to show their displeasure with some saying that in bringing him on both the players and ATP are turning a blind eye to the allegations levied against him.
"Shame on the players who voted that abuser in. fr. like the top 50 players thought that was a good idea???? this is beyond disappointing," one fan wrote.
"I just want to feel like someone actually cares but it's painfully obvious that no one does," another wrote.
Further takes on the appointment include: "Zverev’s appointment to the Players Council is a real disappointment. Zverev faces very real allegations of domestic abuse by two women, including a 450,000 Euro fine being issued in Court, yet he is celebrated by the ATP and his peers. It sends an awful message to victims of DV."
"Regardless of how you feel about Zv*rev’s guilt, the man has not been found innocent and still has open and credible abuse allegations against him. To allow him to continue playing is one thing, but to allow him to assume a position of authority is another thing entirely."
