The three-time Masters 1000 champion Alexander Zverev is competing at home in Munich this week, seeking the third title at one of his favorite events and hoping to leave injury behind him.
In his pre-tournament interview, the German confirmed that he will compete at the Tokyo Olympics this year, not only in singles but also in the mixed doubles alongside Angelique Kerber. Zverev and Kerber have known each other well, defending the national colors at the Hopman Cup and reaching two finals in the last two editions in 2018 and 2019, losing both to Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic.
In 2019, the Swiss squad prevailed 2-1 in Perth, as the battle went down to the wire and the championship point for both countries at 4-4 in the deciding tie break! Roger and Belinda claimed that one to defend the title, with Zverev and Kerber hoping for another strong run in three months in Tokyo.
World no. 6 has won ten matches so far in 2021, making a slow start at the ATP Cup before reaching the Australian Open quarter-final that he lost to Novak Djokovic after a thriller. Zverev suffered early losses in Rotterdam, Monte Carlo and Miami and won the ATP 500 title in Acapulco in between to make the start of the season a decent one.
