It was a sensational final between
Alexander Zverev and
Matteo Berrettini with the German capping off a stellar week with the trophy.
It was no the final everyone had hoped to see but Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini delivered a sensational level of tennis. The match had plenty of great rallies and points. It had drama and it had a great finish. Ultimately it was Zverev who lifted the trophy capping off a sensational week in Madrid.
He started the match a bit better forcing a break point early but failed to use it. After Matteo shook off the initial nerves he started playing better and even breaking Zverev to take a 4-3 lead. However, Zverev produced a stunning comeback to tie it up at 4-4.
The first set ended in a very dramatic tiebreak where Berrettini went up 5-0 before Zverev found a way back. He saved a set point at 5-6 to take the 7-6 lead. Then Matteo saved a set point before he finally won it with 10-8. The 2nd set did not feature much drama as both dominated on their serves.
Zverev was marginally better and late in the 2nd he finally broke Berrettini to take a 6-4. The 3rd was a great one as well. There were two key moments that happened in consecutive games. Zverev saved a break point at 1-2 which was a big hold after which he broke Berrettini.
That break proved decisive and Zverev was able to close it out with 6-3. It was only the 2nd time Berrettini lost a match on clay after winning the opening set in 31 matches which speaks volumes to the level Zverev was able to produce. A sensational week and deserved the 4th Masters trophy for the German. Congratulations!
