It's been a great week for
Alexander Zverev who won the 2021
Madrid Open defeating Matteo Berrettini in the final.
Alexander Zverev was crowned the 2021 Madrid Open champion for the 2nd time in his career. He produced a sensational week beating players like Evans, Nadal, Thiem and ultimately Berrettini. The German won his 4th ATP 1000 Masters title which gave him satisfaction knowing he lost the previous 3 Masters finals he played. He admitted as much post-match:
“It is great [to win this title], especially after losing my last three finals I played at Masters 1000 events. This is definitely special and I just want to enjoy this one.”
The win ended a three-year drought for Zverev at Masters 1000 event something that seemed unlikely when he went his first two ones in 2017. Zverev admitted Berrettini was his toughest opponent all week saying explaining the uniqueness of his game:
“[Matteo’s] game style showed it all. I didn’t play anybody this week that can serve 235[km/h] on clay and serve 230km/h kick serves. It definitely was a different match and I am extremely happy right now.”
Zverev will now travel to Rome where he holds a career record of 11 wins and three losses. His maiden Masters title was Rome in 2017 and he enjoys that event. He said:
“Rome is also an event I like and enjoy, so I hope I can perform [in] the same way as I did here and we will see how it goes there. I feel awesome."
