Novak Djokovic is slowly starting to develop a bitter rivalry with Alexander Zverev especially after the German is starting to make a habit of defeating the Serbian in very big matches. The first one this year came at the Olympics and the 2nd came tonight at the ATP Finals. Zverev came out very strong in the match blasting serves left and right.
The conditions in Turin allow the German to fully unleash his serve and when it's working it's a major weapon. Today it worked from the start. Djokovic responded well to that and played very strong tennis himself. At 5-4, Djokovic was able to carve out a set point but the German answered with a stellar serve. In the next game, Zverev had break points but Djokovic held on. The tiebreak was greatly played by both but Zverev was a bit better.
Djokovic committed his first double fault at the event at 2-2 and that mini-break proved very closely after Zverev won the tiebreak 7-4. Djokovic's serve betrayed him at the end but he found it again in the 2nd set. Zverev was solid as well and the players were able to cruise in their service game rather easily. Djokovic finally caught a break at 4-4 when Zverev played a bit weak. The Serbian broke him and closed out the set with 6-4.
The 3rd set was an interesting one as there was a sense of Djokovic being on the rise. However, the opposite happened as Zverev was the one that showed more fight and grit in the 3rd set. Djokovic played okay but he needed something better against Zverev who was very focused. After taking a 4-1 lead Zverev faced strong opposition from Djokovic at 4-2 but the German was brilliant saving a break point in that game.
Ultimately he closed it out with 6-3 and it was a brilliant performance worthy of the ATP Finals. He will face Daniil Medvedev tomorrow.
