Russian tennis star
Daniil Medvedev suffered a shock early-round loss at the 2023
French Open, to which
Alexander Zverev has attributed to 'karma'.
Seeded second at the event, Medvedev was defeated by
Thiago Seyboth Wild in a marathon first-round encounter. The unseeded Brazilian rallied back from being a set down to secure a 7-6 (5) 6-7 (6) 2-6 6-3 6-4 victory, recording the biggest win of his career at the time.
Zverev hints at callous behavior by Medvedev being reason for his loss
On the latest season of Netflix's Break Point, fans were taken behind the scenes as Zverev progressed through the tournament. The German made it as far as the semifinals, losing to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud. However, upon being informed of Medvedev's early loss, Zverev made a somewhat cryptic statement.
"Medvedev is one of the best players in the world, so it helps not playing him at an early stage," said Zverev. "But at the same, I do believe in karma. I do believe that if you wish bad upon someone, then the bad is going to come back to you."
It should be noted that Zverev and Medvedev were feuding at the time, as they had just faced off in Monte-Carlo a few weeks earlier. The Russian had prevailed, although Zverev later accused Medvedev of unsportsmanlike behavior due to his strategic bathroom breaks that disrupted the German's rhythm.
