Day 4 at the Australian Open featured an abundance of dramatic 5-set matches including the ones where Fritz and Khachanov won
Taylor Fritz battled back from being down 0-2 against
Kevin Anderson to secure a victory in the most dramatic fashion. The up and coming American is no stranger to the tennis world but he is yet to string along a massive result that could be considered a breakout performance. His victory against Anderson today might just be that won. Losing the first two sets 4-6 and 6-7(5) was a tough thing to swallow but the American kept fighting.
He won the 3rd set with 7-6(4) against Anderson whose level of play dipped only slightly. It was an uplifting event for the American who entered beast mode winning the next set with 6-2. Anderson looked exhausted which was expected considering his long absence from the courts. Exhaustion wasn't bothering Fritz who once again dominated in the final set winning it 6-2 in spectacular fashion.
Another 5-set match which took place was between Ymer and Khachanov. The Russian who burst to the scene when he won the Paris Masters against Djokovic has failed to build upon that result. He was overtaken by other players in the pecking order most notably his countrymen Medvedev. His opponent today was a young Swede who was considered a great talent once. He failed to convey but is now starting to unleash his full potential.
Karen won the first set pretty easily with 6-2 but lost the next with the exact same result. He played much better in the 3rd winning it 6-4 but again failed to reciprocate the same level in the next one which he lost 3-6. The final set had to go the full distance and we ended in the long tie-break. In it, the Russian finally found some composure from his old days as he won it 10-8. It was a much-needed confidence boost for Khachanov who is still trying to regain his past form.
