Andrey Rublev returned to winning ways in Hamburg, where he lifted the trophy two years ago, by beating RIcardas Berankis 6-3 6-4.
It was a comfortable win for Rublev in the 73-minute match and the first singles match he played since the interview with a Russian YouTuber. In the video, Rublev explained what transcribed behind the season around Wimbledon time and how he tried to find a solution for both sides.
He also hinted at a willingness to switch citizenships should the Russian ban expand beyond Wimbledon. For now, he's still playing under a neutral flag due to the ATP sanctions on the Russian Tennis Federation but his mind is solely on tennis. Showing no signs of any discomfort Rublev played his aggressive brand of tennis that got him an early break.
From there he was able to cruise to a 6-3 finish despite facing a couple of break points on his serve as well. The 2nd set was fairly similar with Rublev once again in control early 3-1. He lost the break not long after that allowing Berankis to take the 4-3 lead but that was the final game the Lithuanian would win. Upping his level once more, Rublev cruised to a 6-4 2nd set finish winning three games in a row.
