Kyle Edmund was once ranked inside the top 20 but the British player has not played in close to two years due to injuries.
Edmund actually made a brief return to tennis at Wimbledon taking part in the mixed doubles event and losing in the first round. It was his first match in 18 months but next month he will finally play his first singles event since October of 2020. Edmund injured his knee back then and underwent a surgery for it but recovery was slow with chronic pain.
Edmund suffered a couple of setbacks since then having to undergo two additional procedures bringing the total tally to 3. He said:
“It’s not an injury that heals by itself, and there is no
straightforward procedure to have. It’s just something that’s now part
of my life. I have just accepted that. I will constantly be dealing with it. It’s not like now that I’ve had three ops it’s all fixed. But
I’m happy where I’m at and I can enjoy playing now and just wake up and
be a tennis player rather than a professional rehabber, which was what I
was feeling for a long time.”
Edmund can now finally play tennis again the way he wants to and he hopes to get back to a decent level once more. His first event back will be Washington where he will test himself against some pretty strong opposition.
“It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself so, when you do have bad days, you nip it in the bud and you address it. It’s not the end of the world. I’m confident that I’ll get back. I still have years ahead of me and time to play."
