Andrey Rublev was able to solve the Felix Auger-Aliassime riddle in the Open 13 Provence final taking down the Canadian 7-5 7-6(4).
Auger-Aliassime has been one of the best performing players so far this season and he played another good event reaching the final. It was a 2nd consecutive final for the Canadian but not a 2nd consecutive trophy as Andrey Rublev proved better in this one. The start was actually very good for the Canadian as he went up 2-0.
Rublev was a bit tight to start the match but he quickly battled back to level the score. He nearly went up 3-2 in the match but Auger saved some break points to keep himself in it. A bit later Rublev had to save break points but just like Auger, he was able to do it successfully. Eventually, the Russian's patience paid off as he was able to outwait some serving woes for the Canadian.
At 5-5 Rublev got another break point and this time he proved clinical converting it and taking a 6-5 lead. He closed out the first set with 7-5. The 2nd set oepned okay for both as neither was able to generate much pressure early. Rublev went ahead first breaking Auger who struggled with his serve at times. The Canadian got a bit lucky with Rublev playing a lacklstre game and he was able to level the score. Another poor serving game for Auger resutled in Rublev taking a 5-3 lead.
Auger broke his opponent when Rublev for the set to keep himself in the match. Eventually, the Canadian also had a set point at 6-5 but Rublev was able to hang on. He then went on to win the 2nd set with 7-4 in the tiebreak winning the trophy.
