It was a fairly fast-paced match that went the full distance finishing just over four hours in the favour of Rublev 6-4 2-6 6-7(3) 6-4 7-6(7).
The opening set featured very good play by both. Rublev was a tiny bit better despite having to fend break points in the first game of the match. He stabilized later getting himself to a 5-4 lead which turned to a 6-4 finish. He was quite lucky that Shapovalov served poorly because had he served better, he might have gotten away with it.
The 2nd set was much better by Shapovalov who smacked Rublev with hyper-aggressive play and the Russian was unable to counter in a good way. The 3rd set was a proper battle with both players having many chances but neither converting them. Shapovalov played more aggressively and had more winners but the tiebreak decided it.
7-3 for Denis with a pretty big upset on the cards. The 4th set is when both of their levels' started slipping a bit but Shapovalov once again served rather poorly. He fell behind early but battled back to make it 3-3 before dropping his serve once more and losing the set 4-6. The final set was a pretty good one by both.
Shapovalov once again risked more and went for his shots more which gave him a couple of early break points but no break. He lost his serve at the worst time at 4-4 but saved three match points to make it 5-5. Super tiebreak followed and Rublev used his 5th match point to finally seal the deal.
