Young French tennis star
Arthur Fils will represent Team Europe
in the upcoming
Laver Cup.
The news was announced on Wednesday in a press release where
it was stated that the 19-year-old will represent Team Europe as an alternate.
It is not clear which player he will replace in a
star-studded team that consists of their captain and French tennis star Gael
Monfils, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune of Denmark, three-time Grand
Slam runner-up Norway’s Casper Ruud, Russia’s Andrey Rublev and Poland’s Hubert
Hurkacz.
Fils, despite having a lot of potential, will be coming into
the event on the back of a disappointing US Open where he was knocked out from
the round of 64 after losing to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in a five-set thriller
with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.
Laver Cup remains a unique competition as it is played between
two teams comprising Team Europe and Team World. This year’s edition will be
played from September 22 to 24 in Vancouver, Canada.
The tournament began in 2017 and since then, Team Europe has
remained dominant where they won four out of the five editions. Their only
defeat came last year when Team World finally emerged victorious for the first
time.
