Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Joao Fonseca were among the players to advance on Day Five of the BNP Paribas Open
Indian Wells, with several tight matches shaping the Round of 16 lineup at Tennis Paradise. Learner Tien delivered one of the biggest upsets of the session by defeating Ben Shelton, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also progressed after overcoming Jakub Mensik in three sets.
Sinner continued his consistent run in the California desert with a straight-sets victory over Denis Shapovalov, while Zverev survived a close battle against Brandon Nakashima. Fonseca, meanwhile, impressed by defeating Tommy Paul to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. Tien’s upset over Shelton added another twist to the draw as the tournament moved into the second week.

Alexander Zverev battled past Brandon Nakashima in a tight three-set contest to reach the fourth round, recovering after dropping the opening set in a tie-break. The match was largely decided by small margins, with both players dominant on serve throughout.
Nakashima edged the first set after holding firm in the tie-break, but Zverev gradually found a way back into the match. The German raised the pressure late in the second set and secured a decisive break to take it 7-5, forcing a decider.
Serve remained the central factor, with Nakashima landing 73% of first serves and Zverev 76%, while both players won 81% of points behind their first delivery. Break chances were rare, making the key moments even more important.
In the third set, Zverev proved slightly more effective on return, winning 61% of points on Nakashima’s second serve compared with the American’s 54%. Both players held 16 of their 17 service games overall, underlining how narrow the contest was as Zverev eventually secured his place in the next round.

Learner Tien produced one of the most notable upsets of the day, defeating Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 to reach the Round of 16 at
Indian Wells. The 20-year-old American held his nerve in a tightly contested match that was largely dictated by strong serving from both players.
The opening set remained on serve throughout, with neither player able to create sustained pressure on return. Tien showed composure in key moments, saving four break points before the set was eventually decided in a tie-break. The youngster maintained his focus in the breaker, taking advantage of a crucial mini-break to edge the set.
Shelton responded in the second set by raising his level behind serve. The American No. 1 remained solid in his service games and finally created the opening he needed late in the set, securing a break at 5-4 before closing it out with a sequence of strong first serves.
In the deciding set, Tien regained the initiative by applying more consistent pressure on Shelton’s serve. The young American eventually secured the decisive break and managed the closing stages confidently to seal the victory and book his place in the fourth round.

The Spaniard made the stronger start, taking the opening set with an efficient performance on serve and return while preventing Mensik from generating early break opportunities. The Czech responded in the second set, raising his level and relying on a powerful serve that produced eight aces to level the match.
The momentum shifted again at the start of the third set, when Davidovich Fokina secured an immediate break and dictated play from the baseline. His consistency on second serve proved decisive, winning 61% of those points compared with 31% for Mensik, who also committed five double faults.
Davidovich Fokina also managed the key moments more effectively, saving six of eight break points and converting five of ten on return. The victory sends him into the Round of 16, where he will face Learner Tien.

Jannik Sinner delivered a controlled performance to defeat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2 and secure his place in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells. The Italian gradually asserted himself after a competitive start, capitalising on errors from the Canadian late in the opening set.
The match began with early momentum swings, as Shapovalov broke to love in the opening game before Sinner immediately responded to level the score. From there, the Italian settled into his rhythm behind a highly effective first serve, winning 84% of those points and limiting opportunities for Shapovalov to apply pressure.
The decisive moment of the first set came in the closing games when Shapovalov’s errors began to accumulate. Sinner converted a late break opportunity and served out the set to move ahead.
The world No. 2 carried that momentum into the second set, securing an immediate break and continuing to target Shapovalov’s second serve. The Canadian struggled to regain consistency, committing seven double faults and winning only 23% of points behind his second delivery.
Sinner maintained control from the baseline and continued serving efficiently, landing 79% of first serves. After earning a second break to lead 5-2, the Italian closed out the match without difficulty to set up a fourth-round clash with Joao Fonseca.

Joao Fonseca delivered one of the standout performances of the day, defeating local favourite Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time in his career.
The 19-year-old Brazilian took control early, breaking Paul to move 4-1 ahead in the opening set and quickly establishing the rhythm of the match. Fonseca remained composed behind his serve while consistently applying pressure on return, forcing Paul to defend during baseline exchanges.
Statistically, the Brazilian held the advantage across the key categories. He won 74% of points behind his first serve and 65% on his second delivery, while Paul managed just 32% of points behind his second serve. Fonseca also won 41% of return points against Paul’s first serve and an impressive 68% against the American’s second.
Fonseca converted four breaks of serve and dropped his own delivery only once, maintaining control throughout the contest. The victory sends the Brazilian into the fourth round, where he will face Jannik Sinner.
