The
ATP Rankings points system has changed during the pandemic introducing the 'protected ranking' however things will return to normal on August 23rd.
The protected ranking system introduced during the pandemic allowed players who have not played during the pandemic to retain their points and ranking. The most obvious beneficiary of such a system has been
Roger Federer who remained in the top 10 despite not playing for over a year.
In the traditional system, Federer would rank outside the top 100 by now which would severely impact his ability to participate in events the way he used to since returning. Another interesting development happened a fortnight ago when Marketa Vondrousova used her protected ranking to travel to the Olympic Games instead of Karolina Muchova who was ranked higher.
Vondrousova played a great event and won the silver medal for the Czech Republic so it kind of worked out. Many players criticized the ranking system most notably Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev who were not happy to be ranked below Federer. Things will return to normal on August 23rd.
Points will be added and subtracted as they usually were. That will have huge implications on the rankings system especially on players who have played rarely after the season resumed. The final event played under the current rules will be the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
