ATP Rankings Update: Fery regains British number one spot as US Open set to mix up pecking order

The US Open has begun with a lot of movement set to occur in the ATP Rankings, but the week beforehand has been a relatively quiet one as a storm over New York slowly brews and is set to explode in two weeks.

The Winston-Salem Open has been the main tournament last week in which some players competed to get that last-minute preparation for the fourth and final Grand Slam of 2026. The highest ranked being Daniil Medvedev who lost at the first hurdle, leaving him in eighth place.

In fact, the first movement comes all the way down in 30th with Ignacio Buse winning the Winston-Salem Open against the new British hero Arthur Fery. There was movement in store for both players. The Peruvian boosted himself to 30th as he continued to enjoy a brilliant year with Fery reasserting his British number one spot in 34th ahead of a first ever US Open campaign. In the process Alexander Blockx, Cameron Norrie, Matteo Arnaldi and Zizou Bergs all dropped two positions.

A quarter-final run for Juan Manuel Cerundolo boosts him up to 45th, three positions off his career best. Stefanos Tsitsipas exited a round earlier, and stays put in 53rd. Adolfo Daniel Vallejo climbs a place into a new career high of 60th.

James Duckworth was one of the biggest winners. Despite retiring in the semi-final against Fery, 90 points added to his total lifts him to 71st, an eight-place rise. American duo Aleksandar Kovacevic and Martin Damm find themselves in 84th and 90th, with the latter the highest ranking ever achieved. The other semi-finalist, Benjamin Bonzi, returns to the top 100.

Overall, there was little movement. However, that will change with a number of points coming off some of these players. Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz remains behind Alexander Zverev, who defends a third round, with Jannik Sinner leading the way with a huge lead despite him not being involved.

Chances could arise for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Flavio Cobolli, currently in fourth and sixth, to reach new career highs with Novak Djokovic hovering in fifth for the time being, but an inevitable fall in the rankings once more with his first opening round defeat at Grand Slam level for over two decades. Alex de Minaur still awaits his first Grand Slam semi-final run with him being found in seventh ahead of the former winner Medvedev.

American duo Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz conclude the top 10 with Cincinnati Open finalists Arthur Fils and Frances Tiafoe coming into the tournament in great form. A debut US Open for Rafael Jodar may be the latest remarkable twist in this stunning campaign. Lorenzo Musetti and Jiri Lehecka will need to defend quarter-finals from last year.

Joao Fonseca, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Ugo Humbert are the notable absentees from Flushing Meadows along with the World No.1 and will be forced to watch from a distance with a possible ranking fall on the cards.
