The first Masters 1000 tournament of 2026 has been played in its entirety. A whole heap of points have been on offer to claim in the Californian desert, with many of the best players in the world taking up this opportunity as they look to rise up the tally. This, however, was also the case last year and not everyone was able to defend everything.
Sinner closes the gap after title win, Medvedev back in top 10
A semi-final run in California cements Carlos Alcaraz’s spot
at number one with him barely defending anything at the
Miami Open. Another
chance to extend his lead over
Jannik Sinner who will be charging back at him.
Back in form after clinching the Indian Wells title, he has closed the gap back
in second. Novak Djokovic could only manage a fourth round and is looking over
his shoulder with Alexander Zverev looking to close in behind. With the points
coming off from his Miami Open final run last year, Zverev will be confident to
gain a place in the coming weeks.
Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz remain
firmly planted in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, after enduring some
early exits. Felix Auger-Aliassime jumps above Ben Shelton, who loses a number
of points. It is a return to the top 10 for
Daniil Medvedev after his brilliant
recent run of form continues. A third runner-up at Indian Wells sees him
leapfrog Alexander Bublik back into the world's best.
Big drops around this area mean the likes of Casper Ruud,
Jakub Mensik, Flavio Cobolli, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev hop up one spot.
Mensik will be in danger in the coming weeks, with him set to defend his Miami
Open title. Better news for Cobolli, who is in a new career high at world number
14. Further down the list, fellow Italian Luciano Darderi (18th) and
Learner Tien (21st) also reach new heights. In Darderi’s case, a debut
in the top 20.
Last year’s finalist plummet
While it is not entirely their fault,
Jack Draper and Holger
Rune were destined to tumble down the rankings. Draper gave it a good go in his
title defence, reaching the quarterfinals before losing out to Medvedev. Damage limitation as the former world number
four drops 12 places to 26th. He is also no longer the British
number one, with Cameron Norrie snatching that tag back for the time being. His
quarterfinal run saw him jump up five places.
Rune is still out with a serious achilles injury and will be
for some time. Another 10 places he falls, now perched in 28th with
the potential to drop much further in the coming months in no fault of his own.
Tallon Griekspoor also suffered the consequences of injury, dropping four
places to world number 29 after previously reaching a final in Dubai.
Holger Rune reached the final of Indian Wells 2025
Alex Michesen gains some valuable points to pop him back into
the top 40, while 37-year-old Adrian Mannarino continues his progress after a
quarterfinal in a Challenger tournament in Phoenix. There is more misery coming
the way of Stefanos Tsitsipas, who moves down another eight places with a first
round exit, denting his progress. He now sits outside the top 50 in 51st
place. A huge fall in grace. Further down the list, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
suffers a five-place drop to 59th with Vit Kopriva (60th)
and Ignacio Buse (63rd) reaching new career highs. Ethan Quinn trumps all of them, however, leaping above them into a new career high of 56th in the world.
Some of the biggest risers are yet to come. Sebastian
Ofner confirms a return to the top 100 after winning a Challenger event in
Thionville, France. There is also Challenger success for Mariano Navone. An 18-position gain is his prize for coming out on top in the Dominican Republic. A rise of 21 places puts him in 87th, with Rinky
Hijikata’s fairytale run at Indian Wells boosting him back up the order, placed
98th after a 19-spot jump. Other big risers include Mattia Bellucci
(+17 to 77th), Alexander Blockx (+9 to 88th) and Dalibor
Svrcina (+9 to 100th).
With many risers, there have to be fallers at the same time.
They include Valentin Royer (-9 to 69th), Damir Dzumhur (-12 to 76th),
Thiago Agustin Tirante (-7 to 81st) and Matteo Arnaldi (-16 to 101st).
