The lineup for the 2024 Laver Cup tournament is beginning to take shape, as American rising star Ben Shelton has been confirmed as a participant at the international event.
Conceived by Roger Federer in 2017, the Laver Cup sees top players represent either Team Europe or Team World. Both teams clash over a weekend of singles and doubles tennis, with the winning team taking home the trophy after garnering the most points. Team Europe won the first four editions of the event, from 2017-2021, with Team World winning the last two in 2022 and 2023.
This will be Shelton's second straight appearance at the Laver Cup. The 21-year old made a stunning debut at Laver Cup Vancouver in 2023, where he won three matches for the victorious Team World, including his opening singles match against Arthur Fils and two doubles matches, teaming with Felix Auger-Aliassime on and Frances Tiafoe on consecutive days.
“Ben thrives in a team environment and relishes the big stage,” said Team World captain John McEnroe, who is hunting a third consecutive Laver Cup title. “He brings an incredible energy to the team and is a threat in both singles and doubles with a massive serve and fierce will to win.”
Shelton will join World No.9 Alex de Minaur, No.12 Tommy Paul and No.13 Taylor Fritz on Team World, led by captain John McEnroe. The seventh edition of the Laver Cup will be held at Uber Arena in Berlin, from September 20-22, 2024.
