Matteo Berrettini advanced to the second round of
Roland Garros following a victory over
Vasek Pospisil in straight sets.
The 3rd day of the Roland Garros was kicked off with a strong match where Matteo Berrettini took on Vasek Pospisil. The Canadian is not a clay specialist by any means but his strong play on his serve makes him a tough opponent to beat on any surface.
The first started off well for both players but Berrettini looked much more comfortable on clay and very soon he found ways to attack Vasek. Midway through the set, he broke him taking the lead. He would add another break later on in the set winning it 6-3.
In the 2nd set Pospisil completely collapsed which Matteo took advantage of attacking him continuously on his own serve breaking him twice en route to a 5-0 sweep in just over 20 minutes. Pospisil tried to mix it up late with modest success but the set still went to Matteo 6-1.
In the final one, he resisted Berrettini the hardest mixing up his playmaking it hard for Matteo to read or attack it with success. It lasted for a half a set before Matteo once more found the key to success breaking him twice in the last three games and winning the set 6-3.
With all of that said, it was a solid display for Berrettini which highlighted his capability to adapt to the type of play his opponent has which will suit him well in the long run.
