World number one
Novak Djokovic’s
some fans agreed with Serena Williams’ ex coach Patrick Mouratoglou’s assessments
about why players should not put winning an Olympic gold medal ahead of lifting
a Grand Slam.
The 53-year-old recently made a strange
comment where he stated that winning a Grand Slam should always be a priority
for all tennis players.
"There is no real connection
between tennis and the Olympic Games. Tennis was at the Olympics, then it got
out, and finally, it was reintroduced. As a consequence, there is no
history," he wrote. “I am not a specialist in swimming, but I feel you
have the European Championships, the World Championships, the Olympic Games,
and all the other events are just to prepare for those ones.
“A lot of tennis players don’t
feel that it’s such an important event. They feel that a Grand Slam is 100
times more important. For most of the players, to win one Grand Slam would be
the highest achievement possible.”
One of Djokovic’s fans, while
commenting on the quote in a post on social media platform X — previously known
as Twitter, agreed with that notion and suggested that it was his obsession with
winning a gold medal at the Olympics that ruined the chances of the Serbian legend to
complete a career Grand Slam.
The 36-year-old is often regarded
as the greatest player in the history of men’s singles tennis, having won
as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, most by any player in the Open era.
