Former German tennis player
Andrea Petkovic has come to the defence of the world number one
Jannik Sinner after he was labelled ‘boring’ despite his success in the recently concluded
US Open. The 23-year-old is already
regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the
singles category, along with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Sinner recently won the US Open after beating America’s
Taylor Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4, 7-5. With
that result, he became the first Italian player to lift the title in the men’s singles
category at the Flashing Meadows. Despite that result, there has been some
criticism from different quarters regarding Sinner's gameplay, who believe that he has been a bit ‘boring’.
Former world number nine Petkovic was recently quoted in a
report where he came to defense of the San Candido-born star. The 37-year-old not
only praised Sinner for his recent achievements but was also of the opinion that
even the likes of Djokovic and Spain’s legendary tennis star and former world
number one Rafael Nadal took some pace off when they were in a crunch moment.
"For anybody who finds his [Sinner's] tennis boring,” she
said. “I would urge you to try and see him live if you can. The way he moves,
always in perfect balance, the way his body is leaned slightly forward as if
going down a slope on skis, is a thing of beauty. No matter how hard you hit at
him, he never falls out of his equilibrium. Something you can’t really see on
TV is the astonishing fact that Jannik hits the ball even harder, even more
decisively, when the biggest moment of the match comes around. Even Novak
Djokovic or Rafael Nadal would sometimes take some of the pace off to make more
balls when crunch time is on. Not so Jannik Sinner.”
