Borna Cilic capped off a tremendous week in Cincinnati by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(0) 6-2 in the final for his maiden ATP 1000 trophy.
Coric is a great player and he was once on the verge of breaking into the top 10 however a shoulder injury completely derailed his career. It's only this year that he was able to play good tennis after coming back. Slowly he built upon his form and it worked wonders in Cincinnati.
He entered the event with a protected ranking as he was ranked outside of the top 150 but grew confident with every match win. Today he looked comfortable even when things looked bad and they looked somewhat bad early on. Tsitsipas jumped out to an early 3-0 thanks to some aggressive net play but eventually, Coric did find a good rhythm.
Once he did he turned the match around and it culminated in the tiebreak which he won 7-0. Tsitsipas was easily overpowered by Coric when it comes to baseline rallies and the Greek resorted more and more to shorten the points. He was rushing to the net whenever he could as he was getting nowhere from the baseline.
Eventually his serve faltered a bit and it gave Coric a thing to exploit and he did. He took a 4-2 lead and held the lead after a tight battle in the next game. From there Coric held to win the match in straight sets. An incredibly week for the Croatian who will jump over 100 places and reenter the top 30 after beginning the week outside of the top 150.
