Former
coach of Andre Agassi and Coco Gauff,
Brad Gilbert, praised
Jannik Sinner's
victory over
Taylor Fritz to claim his spot in the
ATP Finals and congratulated
his colleague Darren Cahill. The 23-year-old tennis player defeated the
American 6-4, 6-4, securing his 8th title of the season.
Sinner
finishes the season with more than 4,000 points ahead of Alexander Zverev (No.
2), an impressive 70-6 record, and 8 titles. After Sinner's remarkable year,
Brad Gilbert shared his congratulations, having recently ended his partnership
with WTA No. 3 Coco Gauff.
"Tremendous
effort from Sin City 🌆 @janniksin 1st player since 1986 @atptour
finals to not drop a set. Absolutely dominating since Cincinnati, I tip my cap 🧢 to my buddy @darren_cahill what a
year 😎👍👌👊💪" Gilbert wrote on X.
Jannik
Sinner delivered a historic performance at the ATP Finals this year, becoming
the first player to win the title without dropping a set since Ivan Lendl in
1986. He is also the first Italian to lift the trophy and continues to be
hailed as the best Italian tennis player in history.
"It’s amazing, it’s
my first title in Italy, and it means so much to me," said Sinner.
"It’s something very special. I just tried to understand what works best
for each opponent, trying to play my best possible tennis. That was the
key."
"It
was a very high-level tournament from my side. At times, I couldn't have played
better, so I am very happy," he added.
The world
No. 1 has ended his ATP season but still has one last challenge to face
starting Tuesday at the Davis Cup Finals. Along with Team Italy, they are the
defending champions, and Sinner will be their hope to start off on the right
foot in the quarterfinals against Argentina. The 2-time Grand Slam champion is
set to debut against Sebastian Baez in the second singles match.
