Joao Fonseca’s spectacular start to the year has not only been evident on the court but also on social media. The Brazilian is on track to become the youngest tennis player to reach one million followers on social media. As of today, the Rio native has 905K followers, surpassing other rising stars like Emma Raducanu, Carlos Alcaraz, and Coco Gauff.

After winning the Argentina Open by defeating local favourite Francisco Cerúndolo 6-4, 7-6, the 18-year-old has been making waves—not only due to his young age but also because of his incredible talent and mental toughness. These qualities have propelled him to No. 68 in the ATP rankings (just a year ago, he was ranked 655).

Recently, Fonseca became the first player from the 2006 generation to win an ATP title and the youngest ever champion at the Buenos Aires tournament.

As is often the case in tennis, great talent comes with fame, and Joao is no exception. His meteoric rise in Instagram followers has seen him reach the one-million mark at just 18 years and 6 months old, making him the youngest tennis player to achieve this milestone. He has surpassed other rising stars like Emma Raducanu (18 years and 10 months), Carlos Alcaraz (19 years), and Coco Gauff (19 years and 6 months).

But his fame extends beyond social media. Speaking to the ATP Tour, he shared how surreal it feels to be admired by young fans: “Seeing kids say I’m their idol is crazy. I’m really happy with everything that’s happening.”

Fonseca’s next challenge will be at the Rio Open, where he will compete in front of his home crowd. He will face France’s Alexandre Muller (ATP No. 60) in the first round at Quadra Guga Kuerten.

The young tennis sensation will look to showcase his immense talent once again, this time in front of his fellow Brazilians, as he aims for his first ATP 500 title. Last year, he made a strong impression at the same tournament, receiving a wildcard and defeating France’s Arthur Fils (7th seed) and former champion Cristian Garin en route to the quarter-finals.
