Christopher
Eubanks reflected on being outside the top 100 after reaching the fourth round
of Wimbledon.
One of the
surprises of the 2023
Wimbledon so far has been American player Christopher
Eubanks, who reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his
career.
Against all
odds, he faced the higher-ranked British player Cameron Norrie in the second
round and surprised everyone with a four-set victory. The 27-year-old American
has spent most of his career away from the big tournaments and only broke into the
top 100 in early April this year when he reached the fourth round of the Miami
Open, coming through the qualifying rounds, before falling to the eventual
champion Daniil Medvedev.
In the week
leading up to Wimbledon, he won the Mallorca Open by defeating the 4th seed
Adrian Mannarino in the final with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Eubanks has carried his
good form into Wimbledon, winning eight consecutive matches on grass. Eubanks
revealed in a press conference that his lack of success had made him consider leaving
tennis:
"I had
a real sit down with my agent in 2021. And I said, listen if I'm still ranked
200 by next year and injuries haven’t played a part, I can do something else
with my time," he said.
"It's
not that glamorous throughout the 200 rankings. Luckily, I've been pretty
fortunate because I've been able to qualify for a few Grand Slams and receive
wild cards," Eubanks added.
"I've
gotten extremely frustrated. It's kind of getting a little taste of it and then
going back to the challengers and not being able to consistently produce. That
was one of the driving forces behind me starting to commentate because I said,
man, this isn't fun. If I have to keep doing this, I could try to find
something else to do with my time."
Eubanks
defeated Thiago Monteiro in the first round, followed by the victory against
Norrie, and in the third round, he defeated Australian player Christopher O'Connell
to reach the fourth round. In the next round, he faces a bigger challenge as he
will play against the 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who defeated Dominic Thiem,
Andy Murray, and Laslo Djere.
