Daniil
Medvedev commented on what he likes the most about the Wimbledon crowd.
The former
world No. 1 has always strived to achieve better results on the grass of the
All England Club. Despite being in the top 20 for the past five years and
reaching the top 5 for the last four years, the Russian has never advanced past
the fourth round of
Wimbledon.
In this
tournament,
Daniil Medvedev matched his best result by reaching the fourth
round, just like in 2021, with a great victory over a consistently dangerous
opponent like Marlon Fucsovics. In a four-set battle, Medvedev overcame being
one set down and turned the score around, finishing with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
victory.
In a
post-match interview, Medvedev jokingly mentioned the support he received from
the crowd at the beginning of the match, and how it shifted towards Fucsovics
after he took the lead.
“What I
love about Wimbledon crowds is they always go for the one who's losing, they
always want to see five sets - and then I'm wondering, fifth set, how's it
gonna be, are they gonna change sides depending on who has more games?”
In the
round of 16, he will face 21-year-old Czech player Jiri Lehecka, who has established
himself as one of the most dangerous players on the tour. He was the surprise
of the 2023 Australian Open, reaching the quarterfinals and defeating the 21st
seed Borna Coric, the 11th seed Cameron Norrie, and the 6th seed Felix Auger
Aliassime, before being defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Once again,
Lehecka has caused upsets in this tournament. He first defeated Argentine
player Francisco Cerundolo in the second round with a convincing 6-2, 6-2, 6-2
victory. In the third round, he battled against the 16th seed Tommy Paul,
ultimately emerging victorious in a five-set match.
Lehecka and
Medvedev have never faced each other before, and both players are aiming to
reach their first quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
